Testimonials from past participants

"Daniel respected my work and vision on a profound level, but also had a keen editorial eye and a stroke of literary genius that took everything I’d written to the next level. Is it weird that I think of him as my literary midwife?"

Tawni Waters,
I.L.A. award-winning author

Welcome to the Winter Edition of The Writer's Online Residency
The Winter Residency is designed for writers who:
  • Have a story idea they care about — but don’t yet know how to make it work
  •  Are likely on their second (or third) serious attempt at a novel
  •  Are self-sufficient, driven, and already writing regularly
  •  Want guidance without becoming dependent on a coach
  •  Care deeply about craft and coherence
  •  Are moving forward — but don’t trust the direction they’re moving in
The program contains:
  • The Milestone System: A flexible framework of three sequenced super-prompts that help you re-see and reassess your story—so you know exactly what to work on next.
  • Three Milestone Check-Ins: After completing each milestone, you’ll meet with Daniel over Zoom for a focused 30-minute session to fix plot issues and clarify next steps.
  • Weekly Private Q&A Podcast (6 weeks): A cohort-only audio episode where Daniel answers submitted questions—offering both personal guidance and deeper craft insights.
  • Individual Guidance from Daniel: Each week, submit one question or up to ten pages of your novel and receive thoughtful, narrative-focused feedback via the podcast.
  • Welcome Diagnostic Session (Week 1): A one-on-one video call with Daniel to describe your story and diagnose what’s not working—this becomes the foundation for the entire Residency.
  •  Milestones + 1-on-1 Coaching: Complete three core milestones and unlock a 30-minute coaching session for each one to refine structure, flow, and story logic.
  • Your Project Strategy Map (3-Month Planner): A personalised next-steps plan created in the final weeks, based on your reflections, goals, and story progress—your writing compass for the months ahead.
  • The Novel-Writing OS: All lessons, materials, and prompts packaged into a downloadable reference book you keep forever.
  • Weekly Prompt Packs: Short, pleasure-forward drafting invitations designed to break writer’s block and get you writing again in just 7 minutes at a time.
  • Private Discussion Space (Discord): An intimate, cohort-only space to share progress, ask questions, and receive encouragement between sessions.
  • Optional Peer Review Match: If you choose, you’ll be paired with another writer for light peer review and mutual support throughout the program.
  • Closing Session (Week 6): A 30-minute group wrap-up to reflect on progress, celebrate wins, and leave with clarity and confidence.

"Daniel was able to help see through all my muddled notes to discern the through line of my story. What a relief to have someone look at pages and pages of my notes and be able to see so clearly the story I was trying to tell but had lost sight of in my confusion of losing the forest for the trees! I feel like I have my compass back!" - Carrie James

This is feedback central!
The Residency is designed to provide a large amount of focused, high-quality feedback, delivered in ways that support momentum rather than interrupt it.

Instead of general Zoom calls or hot-seat sessions where you listen to every possible opinion, the feedback here is layered, precise, and personal.

Here’s how that works in practice:

  • An initial one-on-one session with Daniel At the start of the Residency, you meet individually with Daniel to talk through your project and identify what matters most right now. This session sets the direction for everything that follows.

  • Weekly private Q&A podcasts Each week, you submit questions about your story or process. Daniel responds in a cohort-only podcast, offering clear, narrative-focused guidance that helps you make decisions and keep writing.

  • Milestone prompts that invite deep reflection Every few weeks, you’ll complete a substantial milestone prompt designed to help you think more clearly about your story — its beginning, its flow, and its overall shape. These aren’t surface exercises; they’re opportunities to reassess and realign your project at key moments.

Together, these layers create a feedback environment that’s steady, thoughtful, and sustainable.

The goal is simple: to give you the guidance you need without slowing you down.
What Writers Leave With
Over six weeks, the Residency creates space to pause, reflect, and recalibrate — without stopping your momentum.
By the end, writers often describe feeling:

Clearer — the story has a shape they can see and trust
More confident — decisions feel grounded rather than guesswork
Energised — a substantial amount of writing is already behind them
Oriented — with a realistic plan for how to continue through the year
The goal isn’t to rush you to a finish line.

It’s to help you move forward with confidence.

Why the Residency Works This Way?
The Residency doesn’t try to transform who you are as a writer. It helps you reconnect with what you already have — and see how to develop it.

"Not all good writers are good teachers, but Daniel David Wallace (a talented, thoughtful writer himself) is a terrific instructor. Daniel is attentive to plot, structure, character, and other high-level narrative elements, but you’ll appreciate his ability to zoom in closely on language and sentence-level concerns. If you can take a class with him, do it!"
Julia Brown
editor and literary author

- "You are definitely a "book whisperer" !!!

- "It's true what they say about you."

- "Thank you all for the support and structure over these weeks: these notebooks are all filled now! I could not have done this alone."
